When you hear the word exercise, what comes to mind?

For many, it’s images of sweating on a treadmill, lifting heavy weights, or pushing through pain just to “get it done.” But what if I told you that movement doesn’t have to feel like a chore or punishment? In fact, one of the best predictors of long-term success with exercise is joy.

As an Exercise Physiologist, I work with people of all ages, fitness levels, and health conditions. And I can tell you with certainty: when people enjoy the way they move, they’re more likely to keep moving. That’s what Exercise Right Month is all about—finding the right kind of movement for you.

Why Joy Matters in Movement

Let’s face it—life is busy. If exercise feels like a burden or something you dread, it won’t stick. But when it’s something you look forward to, movement becomes a natural and positive part of your routine. Joyful movement can help:

  • Improve mental health and reduce stress
  • Increase motivation and consistency
  • Build self-confidence and a positive body image
  • Make your fitness journey feel sustainable and not feel forced

What Counts as Exercise? More Than You Think

You don’t need to be in a gym or run 10 kilometres to benefit from exercise. Movement can—and should—fit into your lifestyle. Here are a few joyful ways to stay active:

  • Dancing around the house to your favourite music
  • Gardening or walking the dog
  • A gentle yoga class or a stretch session before bed
  • Playing with your kids or grandkids in the park
  • Group fitness with friends that feels more social than serious

If it gets your body moving and puts a smile on your face, it counts.

How to Find Movement That Works for You

Here are a few questions I often ask clients:

  1. What kinds of movement did you enjoy as a child?
Often, this gives us clues—maybe you loved swimming, cycling, or team sports.
  2. Do you prefer structure or freedom?
Some people thrive with classes and routines; others need flexibility and spontaneity.
  3. Are you an indoor or outdoor person?
Your environment can shape how much you enjoy your movement time.
  4. What are your current energy levels and physical needs?
The right type of exercise should meet you where you are, not exhaust you.

It’s Okay to Start Small

You don’t have to go all in on day one. In fact, I recommend starting small and enjoyable—even 10 minutes of movement is a win. Over time, those small choices build into lasting habits. Remember: consistency beats intensity.
